Take Composer

All VIP/Arranger keystrokes are available in the take Composer. However, below are the steps/keystrokes relevant to managing/comping different takes.
Note: Although takes are regarded as objects, many object keystrokes are not to be used, as takes cannot be edited in the same way as in the VIP/Arranger.
A brief explanation of working in the Take Composer. The instructions and examples outlined below, may at first seem confusing, but once understood, you will find creating a composite track easy to achieve. However, I want to first explain the basic concepts needed to work efficiently in the take Composer.

  1. In the Take Composer, the top track is regarded as the master track, and it will contain the take that was active prior to opening the take Composer.
  2. The second track will be the take that was active prior to opening the take Composer, a duplicate of the master track. All subsequent tracks will be other available takes that were recorded.
  3. Pressing the spacebar will only start/stop playback of the master track, unless solo exclusive is turned on for any other track containing a take.
  4. All takes will be the length recorded, E.G. 4 bars in length.
  5. Cut mouse mode must be selected in order to move/make cut points. Pressing Control plus Alt plus O will open the Mouse Mode menu to select this option.
  6. Performing a Shift plus left mouse click on a take, or section of a take, will move it to the master track. E.G. performing a Shift plus left mouse click on a 4-bar take will move the full 4 bars. Performing a Shift plus left mouse click on a 1 bar section of a take will move only that 1 bar.
  7. Performing a left mouse click on a take will cut that take at the current position and move the remainder to the master track. E.G. if a take is 4 bars in length, performing a left mouse click at bar 2 will move bars 2,3 and 4 to the master track.
  8. All cut points will be duplicated across all available takes. E.G. performing a left mouse click at bar 2 on take 1, will also create cut points at bar 2 on all other takes.
  9. It is not possible to move a section of a take from one position to another, E.G. you cannot move a section running from bar 3 to 4 to bar 1 to 2, all material moved to the master track will keep its original position.

Selecting cut mouse mode and auditioning takes

  1. Press Control plus Alt plus O to open the mouse mode menu.
  2. Select "cut mouse mode" from this menu.
  3. Press the up/down arrow keys to move to a track containing a take.
  4. To audition a take on the current track, enable solo exclusive by pressing Alt plus Shift plus S, then press the spacebar. Remember, failure to do this will play the master track, (the track in which any other take/comp will be moved to).
  5. Press the left/right arrow keys to move the transport in the exact same way as in the VIP/Arranger.
  6. Repeat steps 3 - 5 to audition different takes on different tracks.

Selecting a take and moving it to the master track.

  1. Assuming you are on a track containing a take you wish to move to the master track, cut mouse mode is selected and solo exclusive is enabled:
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to the take.
    2. Perform a Shift left mouse button click to select that take with the Jaws keystroke, Shift plus NumPadSlash.
    3. Press Alt plus S to unsolo the current track.
    4. Press the spacebar to begin playback. The take you just selected should now play, as it will have been moved to the master track.

  2. Repeat these steps to select another take on another track, each time the master track will be replaced with that selection.

Moving parts of takes to the master track and creating a composite track with cut mouse mode

Note: This example is using 4 different takes, each 4 bars long from bar 1 to bar 5. We will select the first part of take 1, the second part of take 2, the third part of take 3 and finally the fourth part of take 4. This may initially seem confusing, but the process is basically cutting all of a take right of the position to the master track.

  1. Assuming you are on the track containing take 1, cut mouse mode is selected and solo exclusive is enabled:
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to take 1.
    2. Perform a Shift left mouse click with the Jaws keystroke, Shift plus NumPadSlash to select this take and move it to the master track. Note: This will select all of take 1, but this is necessary at this point, as cut points need to be made. ***The current status is that we now have take 1, which is 4 bars long on the master track. ***
  2. Arrow to the track containing take 2.
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to take 2.
    2. Press Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow to move along this take to bar 2, the transport position will be spoken. The spacebar can be pressed to hear if you have reached the required point. For this example, we move to bar 2, pressing the spacebar will confirm that this is the start of the next section we want. Note: If "snap to grid" is turned on, some position times maybe repeated, continue pressing Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow until you reach the required cut point/position.
    3. When at bar 2, perform a left click with the Jaws keystroke, NumPadSlash to move take 2 from the cut point to the master track. ***The current status is that take 2 from bar 2 has replaced what was previously on the master track. Take 1 is now 1 bar long (from bar 1 to 2) and take 2 is contained in bars 2 to 5.
  3. Arrow to the track containing take 3.
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to take 3.
    2. Press Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow to move along this take to bar 3, the transport position will be spoken. The spacebar can be pressed to hear if you have reached the required point. In this example, we move to bar 3, pressing the spacebar will confirm that this is the start of the next section we want. Note: If "snap to grid" is turned on, some position times maybe repeated, continue pressing Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow until you reach the required cut point/position.
    3. When at bar 3, perform a left click to move take 3 from the cut point to the master track. ***The current status is that take 3 from bar 3 has replaced what was previously on the master track. Take 1 is now 1 bar long (from bar 1 to 2), take 2 is 1 bar long (from bar 2 to 3) and take 3 is contained in bars 3 to 5.
  4. Arrow to the track containing take 4.
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to take 4.
    2. Press Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow to move along this take to bar 4, the transport position will be spoken. The spacebar can be pressed to hear if you have reached the required point. In this example, we move to bar 4, pressing the spacebar will confirm that this is the start of the next section we want. Note: If "snap to grid" is turned on, some position times maybe repeated, continue pressing Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow until you reach the required cut point/position.
    3. When at bar 4, perform a left click to move take 4 from the cut point to the master track. ***The current status is that take 4 from bar 4 has replaced what was previously on the master track. Take 1 is now 1 bar long (from bar 1 to 2), take 2 is 1 bar long (from bar 2 to 3), take 3 is 1 bar long (from bar 3 to 4) and take 4 is contained in bars 4 to 5, each take is 1 bar long and completing the composite track on the master.

Selecting and replacing parts after cutting and moving them to the master track

Note: This procedure assumes all takes have first been cut into a composite track using the previous example called: "Moving parts of takes to the master track and creating a composite track with cut mouse mode.". as each take needs to have been cut in order to move specific sections to the master track, and whenever you have made a cut, that cut is duplicated on all available takes. If we have cut on take 2 at bar 2, then take 1, 3 and 4 will also have that cut point.

Example, we have a 4-bar composite track on the master, bar 1 from take 1 at bar 1, bar 2 from take 2 at bar 2, bar 3 from take 3 at bar 3 and bar 4 from take 4 at bar 4. In this example, we are going to move bar 1 to 2 on take 2 to the master track, replacing what we currently have, which is bar 1 to 2 from take 1.

  1. Assuming you are on the track containing take 2, cut mouse mode is selected and solo exclusive is enabled:
    1. Press Control plus Alt plus enter to move the cursor to take 2.
    2. Press Control plus Alt plus left/right arrow until the transport position is within the boundaries between bar 1 and bar 2, E.G. bar 1 beat 2. This is to make sure the cursor is on the section of take 2 we want to move.
    3. Perform a Shift left click with the Jaws keystroke, Shift plus NumPadSlash, to move bar 1 on take 2 to the master track. This will replace what is currently at bar 1 on the master track, which is bar 1 from take 1.
    4. Repeat these steps to replace sections from other takes to the master track.

Note: when you close the Take Composer the following dialog box may appear:
Apply Take Composer changes dialog Apply changes from Take Composer to original project ? This will be done by copying the range between the punch markers from the first audible (E.G. soloed) track.
Tip: if you want to do this then leave the:
Replace takes on all tracks check box.
Checked.
If you don't wish to do this then you can tab over to the no or cancel buttons.
